Getting the home Spring ready

With Spring around the corner, we thought it a perfect time to share some tips on how to get your home and garden ready.

What to do in the garden?

Below is a 10-step checklist of how to prepare your garden for Spring:

  1. Pull those weeds.
  2. Prune the Summer-blooming flowering shrubs.
  3. Remove the Winter protection.
  4. Check trees (and shrubs) for Winter damage.
  5. Get rid of dead perennial leaves.
  6. Divide perennials.
  7. Rake matted leaves.
  8. Fertilise the beds.
  9. Problem (weed) prevention.
  10. Edge the beds.

And don't forget the lawn...

To revive your grass; give it a short cut, apply generous feeding and level it out with a nutritious organic lawn dressing. Be mindful of the dressing/compost you add as you do not want to introduce unwanted weeds into your lawn. It is always best to ask your local garden centre what their preferred lawn fertiliser is. Finish off with firm raking and spiking. And don't forget to add some water. August is the perfect time for this, but colder regions can wait for September.

What vegetables to plant?

The below guide is based on the Gauteng chart.

Beans (bush & climbing), beetroot, carrots, celery, lettuce, peas, peppers, potatoes, radishes, swiss chard/spinach and tomato are all perfect vegetables to plant in the month of August according to the Seeds for Africa guide.

Finally, a good spring clean in the home is always a great way to embrace the change of season. Working through cupboards to donate clothes that are no longer needed, washing blankets, sorting linen closets, and reorganising wardrobes is the perfect way to ensure you are ready for the warmer months.
